The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation focuses on the pressing health
and health care issues facing our country. As the nation's largest
philanthropy devoted exclusively to improving the health and health
care of all Americans, the Foundation works with a diverse group
of organizations and individuals to identify solutions and achieve
comprehensive, meaningful and timely change. The Foundation seeks:
- To assure that all Americans have access to quality health
care at reasonable cost.
- To improve the quality of care and support for people with
chronic health conditions.
- To promote healthy communities and lifestyles.
- To reduce the personal, social and economic harm caused by
substance abuse— tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs.
For more than 30 years the Foundation has brought experience,
commitment, and a rigorous, balanced approach to the problems
that affect the health and health care of those it serves. By
helping Americans lead healthier lives and get the care they need,
the Foundation expects to make a difference in our lifetime.
Reducing Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Care
Over the past few decades, the Foundation has supported many projects
and programs with particular emphasis on helping specific racial
or ethnic minority groups, based on research that shows the negative
impact of certain health and health care problems on populations
of color. More broadly, the Foundation is committed to improving
the quality of care for all Americans, especially the most vulnerable
among us.
The Foundation’s Disparities strategy is specifically aimed
at helping health care systems—including purchasers, providers
and consumers of health care—ensure that addressing racial
and ethnic disparities in treatment is a high priority in their
ongoing efforts to improve the quality of patient care. By focusing
on the gaps in care that racially and ethnically diverse patients
experience in greater proportions, the Foundation believes the
quality of health care can and will improve for all patients.
